For whatever reason, are you wishing to get up earlier in 2016? You may be thinking that you are not a “morning person” therefore there is no way you can get up early.
Being or not being a morning person is probably false thinking, as you can easily change your biological rhythm as evidenced by when you travel or move abroad. Eventually your body adjusts to the new time zone and you have no problems getting up and functioning during the local waking hours.
So, you CAN adjust your biological rhythm to wake up earlier!
What is the best and least painful way of accomplishing that?
Here are 6 tips.
1. Avoid caffeine at night
Depending on your caffeine sensitivity, you may need to stop ingesting caffeine from late afternoon. Caffeine is a stimulant and will keep you up at night – not helpful if you want to get up early feeling refreshed.
2. Do meditation
Try some meditation apps as you try to go to bed earlier. These will help you relax and help you fall asleep faster. Below are two recommendations (these are for iphone and ipad):
3. Drink chamomile tea
Chamomile tea has a relaxing effect and can help you wind down at night. Don’t drink too much late in the evening, as that may disrupt your sleep as you may need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
4. Adjust in 30-minute increments
Instead of all of a sudden waking up 2 hours earlier than usual, it may be easier if you start with 30-minute increments. Start with getting up 30 minutes earlier than usual, and once your body has gotten accustomed to that, you can try getting up another 30 minutes earlier.
5. Place your alarm clock far away
This may be an old trick, but nonetheless may work for some people. Obviously the idea is, if you have to get out of bed and walk some distance to turn off the alarm, that activity will wake your body up. Unless you are extremely tired and can go back to bed afterwards, this should do the trick and wake you up.
6. Be clear about why you want to get up early
Like many things, once you know the why, the how will follow. Be clear about why you want to get up early. If it is not a strong enough reason for you personally, your motivation will not be strong enough for you to make the changes to get up early.
